Literal Reload November 7, 2006

Well, it happened again:  the IT guy got behind on his backups and had a hard drive crash.  This in itself would not be so bad if it weren’t for the fact that it is the wife‘s business computer that crashed!  Major RELOAD!

All is not lost though, I was able [after about twelve hours of intense mental labor] to get the machine to boot far enough to run chkdsk and recover from the error enough to save the data.  That machine still will not network but I’ve made great use of a USB drive to pull the much needed data.

My closing comment:  How much data (photos, writtings, and financial data) is only on your computer?  You don’t have to back up every file on the drive but make sure you have your important files copied to another device.  And to be really safe [from things like fire or home destroying storms] keep a copy off-site in a safety deposit box or at somebody else’s house.  You don’t want to get caught in a “wish I could but can’t - reload” situation!
